Book suggestions with sensory story tips for Black History Month

As Black History Month approaches I wanted to highlight two brilliant picture books: Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush and Hey You.

I created sensory story resources to accompany both of these books for The Edinburgh International Book Festival – these are available free to download on the book festival website:

Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush (written by Patrice Lawrence and illustrated by Camilla Sucre) is about arriving in Britain on the Empire Windrush. It’s suitable for a wide range of ages.

If you are looking for a Black History Month resource suitable for younger children take a look at the sensory suggestions for Hey You by Dapo Adeola. This book is an empowering celebration of growing up black.
