Accessible Book & Story Festival 2026

11-12 September 2026, with online and outreach events across Scotland throughout September

Making stories fun for everyone

We believe that everyone can enjoy a good story! The Accessible Book & Story Festival is unique in its focus on books and stories for children with additional needs. Join us for a magical mix of inclusive family story sessions, practical skills-building workshops, sensory storytelling and an inspiring exploration of accessible books. For families, teachers, librarians, publishers, authors and others.

The festival hub will be at the Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh in September 2026. Alongside this will be an outreach programme for adults and children with additional needs across Scotland.

The festival was started by My Kind of Book in 2024 in response to research we carried out with families and ASN schools. (Download the report on our inaugural festival here and our research report here.)

Many thanks to Creative Scotland for their continuing support for this project.

Join us at the Scottish Storytelling Centre! Two days packed full of practical ideas for sharing stories with people with additional needs and creative discussions around accessible picture books.

On Friday 11th our programme includes a workshop on haptic sensory storytelling from trailblazing company Concrete Youth and the opportunity to hear from some of the brilliant organisations from across the UK who can help you to make books and stories accessible to people with disabilities, including Pamis, CALL Scotland and Share the Vision. Click here for more details about Friday’s programme.

On Saturday 12th there will be presentations and discussions around the representation of people with disabilities in children’s books, with parent experts and the author Alexandra Strick. The renowned French tactile book company Les Doigts Qui Rêvent will be joining us. And there will be lots of chances to explore all things tactile and sensory when it comes to stories and books. Click here for more details about Saturday’s programme.

Both days will include a wonderful choice of workshops and discussions led by some of the leading experts in sensory stories and picture books for people with additional needs.
